Farmington Hills Home-Based Business Benefits Special Causes

Kim Shaieb enjoys making jewelry that is meaningful to those who wear it.

Kim Shaieb was a stay-at-home mom with an almost 1-year-old son when her aunt showed her how to make jewelry.

More than a year later, the Farmington Hills resident has built a growing business, in part by giving back to a variety of causes through her original creations. Shaieb's Tribute Jewelry carries items that bring awareness to – and benefit – everything from autism and brain cancer to infant loss and miscarriage.

"It seems like people really want something that they find meaningful," she said. "That's the biggest part I enjoy when it comes to jewelry, is creating something that has some meaning behind it. People enjoy having that, and I enjoy making it."

Her miscarriage awareness earrings and bracelet, both made with Swarovski crystals in pink, blue and white, came out of her own experience with losing a baby.

Other items actually raise funds for causes. Based on sales, Shaieb sends an annual donation to organizations that help people who have Down syndrome and those who suffer from Lyme disease, for instance.

"I have also done some in-home shows where a portion of the proceeds get donated," she said.

In addition to her "cause" line, Shaieb carries some bridal jewelry, everyday accessories and "message" jewelry, like a Maternal Earth bracelet in earth tones that includes a peace charm. She said she is also willing to create custom jewelry, when clients ask.

Shaieb now has two children – Anthony is 2 years old, Michael is 6 months – and she finds combining work and motherhood can be a real challenge.

"During the day it's pretty tough to find the time," she said. "But I wanted to be home with my kids, and I wanted to be productive at the same time, and keep my mind fresh and be creative."
