Farmington Hills Police Calls: Child Neglect, Stolen Car, Drug Possession

Hills police find a small child wandering in the road on a cold day.

An officer driving on Roosevelt Ct. near Independence Dr. on Feb. 1 at 2:20 p.m. found a girl described to be about 2 to 3 years-old running in the middle of the road, according to a police report. The officer said she was crying and dressed only in a lightweight sweatsuit and gym shoes, in 20-degree temperatures.

According to the report: The girl was only able to provide her first name, but an officer tracked her shoe prints to a nearby home. Officers found the house in disarray. A six-year-old girl told officers her uncle and brother were playing video games in another room. The 26-year-old uncle said he and his sister's boyfriend were watching the children, but their mother, a 29-year-old woman, said she and her boyfriend left the uncle in charge. The children told the officer they had only eaten a bowl of cereal that day, and officers reportedly found very little food in the house. The case was turned over to investigators.

Vehicle damage

A 17-year-old student told police his vehicle was damaged sometime during the school day on Feb. 7, according to reports. The student, a West Bloomfield resident, reportedly found a 3-inch-long deep, scraping dent on the trunk lid when he returned to the student parking lot at 2:40 p.m.

Stolen vehicles

Authorities in Redford Township recovered a vehicle shortly after it was allegedly stolen from the parking lot on Feb. 7. According to the report, a 31-year-old Detroit woman told police she left her vehicle.

According to reports: Hills Police were told a Redford police officer stopped a vehicle at Grand River and Gaylord for an equipment violation. The officer reportedly saw the steering column was damaged and asked the driver who owned the vehicle. The driver, a 17-year-0ld Detroit teen, admitted he had just stolen it, according to the report.

  • On Feb. 5, a 32-year-old Detroit woman told police she came out of the on Grand River around 9:30 p.m. to find her black Chrysler 300 four-door vehicle was stolen. No glass was found on the ground near where the car was parked, according to the report.

Heroin possession

The driver of a vehicle ticketed for failure to signal a turn at Grand River and Halsted on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. was also arrested for heroin possession. According to the report, an officer made the stop after watching the driver change lanes suddenly, causing another vehicle to swerve. According to the report, the 19-year-old Walled Lake man gave permission to search his vehicle, and officers reportedly found an uncapped syringe concealed in the backseat and a spoon with brown cotton in a purse inside the car. The driver had a folded lottery ticket in his wallet that contained heroin, according to the report. Both passengers, a 22-year-old Keego Harbor woman and an 18-year-old Walled Lake man, were also arrested for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

Marijuana possession

An officer who stopped a vehicle at Grand River and Power on Feb. 3 at 7:05 p.m. for an equipment violation noticed an odor of marijuana coming from inside. According to the report, the driver, a 47-year-old Brighton man, admitted he had marijuana; the officer found two baggies of the drug and a pipe. The driver reportedly had a previous felony drug-related conviction.

  • At 6:16 p.m. the same day, an officer stopped a vehicle on north M-5 west of the Grand River split, because the driver was traveling just 40 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone. According to the report, the officer detected a faint odor of marijuana, and the driver, a 24-year-old Saginaw woman and her passenger, a 30-year-old Farmington Hills man, reportedly appeared nervous. According to the report, the man told the officer he had an ounce of marijuana concealed and pulled two baggies from inside his underwear. The driver reportedly admitted to having pills that weren't prescribed. She was arrested for possession of synthetic narcotics and ticketed for a vision obstruction and impeding traffic. The passenger was arrested for marijuana possession.

Minor in possesssion of alcohol

O.E. Dunckel Middle School principal Allen Archer called authorities on Feb. 1 at 10 a.m., after learning a student had what appeared to be alcohol in his possession. According to reports: a 14-year-old Farmington Hills boy reportedly spoke with assistant principal Kathy Boyd because he was concerned that another student, a 13-year-old Farmington Hills boy, was asking other students to take a drink from the bottle.

According to the report, the red liquid found in the bottle tested positive for alcohol content. The 13-year-old's father was contacted, and the boy was placed on indefinite suspension, pending a hearing to determine whether the incident was the result of his having a disability. The officer reportedly filed a juvenile petition requesting the boy be charged with alcohol possession.
