Only 287 serious crimes — robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, forgery, fraud, embezzlement and narcotics crimes — were reported in 2014, Farmington Public Safety Director Frank Demers told members of the City Council last week, according to report in The Farmington Voice.

Demers said home invasions and commercial burglaries have declined 73 percent and 85 percent, respectively, in the past decade. That’s historic, Demers said, noting that he checked records as far back as 1969.

“We’ve never seen declines like this, never in the history of Farmington,” he said. “I keep saying every year, how are we going to sustain this? But so far so good.”

Though serious crimes declined, larcenies from vehicles surged 186 percent from 2013 to 2014, he said. Most were crimes of opportunity, though. In 86 percent of the cases, doors were left unlocked.
