Get Rid of Hazardous Household Waste: When, What's Accepted

Paper shredding available onsite; unused, unwanted and broken electronics accepted with hazardous household chemicals.

FARMINGTON, MI – The nine member communities of the Resource Recovery & Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County — including Farmington and Farmington Hills — can get rid of unused products containing hazardous household waste during a pair of upcoming collection events, including one in Farmington Hills.

Besides Farmington and Farmington Hills, other member communities of the regional recycling authority are Milford, Milford Township, Novi, South Lyon, Southfield, Walled Lake and Wixom.

  • Saturday, May 7, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Campus, Lot 8, 27055 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills
  • Saturday May 21, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Milford Civic Center, 1100 Atlantic Street. Enter from west off of Mont Eagle Street

Oil-based paint, solvents, automotive fluids, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications will be accepted from residents of the member communities.

Also bring unused, unwanted and broken electronics will also be accepted, and residents may bring up to three boxes of paper or 100 pounds of paper for shredding onsite.

Don’t bring latex paint, explosives, smoke detectors, radioactive waste or commercial/business waste.

Also, be careful when handling and preparing household hazardous waste products for transport to the drop-off events. Keep products in original containers. Don’t mix products together. Keep containers tightly sealed, packed in a box in an upright position and placed in the trunk or on the floor of your vehicle. Never transport leaking or open containers.
