GM Recalls 1.4M Cars to Fix Fire-Causing Oil Leaks
The recall is the third in seven years to fix the problem on vehicles from model years 1997-2004.
General Motors is recalling 1.4 million older model vehicles to fix oil leaks that can cause engine fires.
The Associated Press reports the recall is the third in seven years to fix the problem, which has caused damage to garages and homes in some instances. Repairs made by dealers in previous recalls in 2008 and 2009 didn’t fix the problem, and more than 1,300 vehicles caught fire after they had supposedly been fixed.

Since becoming aware of the defects in 2007, GM has reported 19 minor injuries relate to the fires. In 2008, the automaker reported 267 fires, including at least 17 structure fires, were a result of the oil leak problem.
In the earlier recalls, the automaker suggested to customers that they park their vehicles outside until repairs could be made to minimize damage to their homes and garages. The fires generally are sparked when the ignition is turned off.
