Grammy-Winning New Christy Minstrels to Perform Sept. 12

Randy Sparks, who has returned after parting ways with the band in 1964, says he has "never felt happier or more satisfied" with the group.

The New Christy Minstrels, under the Direction of Randy Sparks, perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.12 at 7the Farmington Players Barn Theatre, located at 32332 W. Twelve Mile Road in Farmington Hills.

The City of Farmington Hills Cultural Arts Division presents the special performance as part of the 2014/15 Cultural Concert Series.

The success of the group throughout the years is a reflection of Randy Sparks’ vision, a dream that began in the summer of 1961. Naming his creation after the Christy Minstrels of the mid-1800’s, Randy intended for a more modern chorus that would perform a range of musical Americana.

The new Christy Minstrels were awarded a Grammy for “Best Performance by a Folk Chorus” in 1962, performed many times on The Andy Williams Show, and performed at the White House in 1964. Randy Sparks parted ways from the band in 1964, but has since returned to his role as leader of The New Christy Minstrels and “has never felt happier or more satisfied with the spirit of teamwork he is enjoying with his group.”

Whether you’ve been a fan for decades or have never heard of the band, join the Cultural Arts Division as they welcome the seven faces of The New Christy Minstrels Under the Direction of Randy Sparks to the Farmington Players Barn stage.

Tickets may be charged by calling 248-473-1848, purchased at the Costick Center at 28600 W. Eleven Mile Road, or purchased online at recreg.fhgov.com.
