Marie Cowley, Widow of Longtime Pub Owner, Dies After Long Illness

Marie Cowley, widow of longtime downtown Farmington pub owner John Cowley, died Wednesday at her home in Farmington, following a 20-year battle with breast cancer. She was 84.

Visitation will be held at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m.-8 p.m., with a rosary prayed Sunday at 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held April 22, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, immediately following the mass. 

According to an obituary published on the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home website, Mrs. Cowley was born Aug. 29, 1928 in Flint, but her family moved back to Ireland during the Depression. After she and John Cowley married in 1951, they moved to the U.S. and purchased The Old Village Inn, later renamed John Cowley & Sons. 

Mr. Cowley died on Feb. 8. A brother, Leo Harte, and Leo's wife, Emma, also preceded Mrs. Cowley in death.

She is survived by sons, Gregory (Maureen), Michael and Patrick; a brother, Patrick (Hanne) Harte; and grandchildren, Sean (Michele), Timothy (Erin), Brendan (Amy), Errin, Ryan, Shana, Chelsey, and Rory.
