MLK Day Speaker's Topic 'The Courage of a King'

At the end of the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, winners will be announced in "The Courage of a King" writing contest.

The keynote speaker at Farmington Hills 2015 observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is expected to challenge audience members to have courage and face the obstacles standing in the way of full equality.

The service begins with a procession beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 28000 New Market Road, to the Farmington Community Library’s main branch at , 32737 West 12 Mile Road.

Following the one-third mile trek, several performances are planned, with financial support provided by the Farmington Friends of the Library.

The O.E. Dunckel Middle School Choir performs at 10:15 a.m. in advance of the keynote address, “The Courage of a King,” at 10:45 a.m. by LaNesha DeBardelaben, vice president of assessment and community engagement at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

  • 11:30 a.m.: A Poet Ber-Henda Williams
  • 1 p.m.: A dramatic and energized storytelling experience by renowned performer Miz Rosie
  • 2 pm.: Harrison High School Dance Co.
  • 2:30 p.m.: Awards Ceremony for “Courage of a King” Writing Contest
  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Crafts in the Children’s Program room

Also, Artwork by artist Robbie Best will be on display at the Main Library from January through February.

Also on display from Jan. 18-31 is the exhibit “We Don’t Want Them: Race and Housing in Metropolitan Detroit, 1900-1968” from the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion.
