Neighborhood Shop: Sunny Day Care Founded by Working Moms

The downtown Farmington child care facility celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Farmington is a haven for families looking for a safe and nurturing place to entrust their child’s care while they go to work.

Sue Casey and a childhood friend, both working moms, first opened  in 1992, so they could care for their own children full-time.

Initially located on Folsom Rd. and Nine Mile Rd., the child care facility served families with children up to the age of three. In 1999, Sunny Day Care moved to its current location on 33200 Slocum Rd., one block east of Farmington Rd. and two blocks south of Grand River, to expand into caring for children as young as six weeks to kindergarten.

“We treat the children the same way we want our children to be treated,” said Casey, who is now the sole owner of the daycare.

A caring and dedicated staff – most of whom have been part of Sunny Daycare for more than 14 years – coupled with a low teacher-to-staff ratio and the Montessori philosophy of learning, makes the day care an ideal place for children to grow and thrive.

In addition, Sunny Day Care offers a toddler program that includes toilet training; full and half-day Montessori preschool and a Montessori kindergarten, as well as a summer camp for elementary-age kids.

“I feel we give a lot more individual care to the child and the family,” Casey said, adding that the Montessori philosophy focuses on each child’s development. Children learn at their own pace, rather than all children learning the same curriculum at the same time.

Despite the challenging economy and the need to increase enrollment, Casey said she has been able to keep tuition at the same rate for the past five years.

Daycare hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more information, call 248-476-1414, visit sunnydaycare.com or check them out on Facebook
