New in July: Free Diabetes PATH classes at Beaumont, Farmington Hills

Classes taught at Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills, formerly Botsford Hospital

Beaumont Health has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan to host free, six-week workshops to help adults with type 2 diabetes improve their overall health and have increased energy. Family members and caregivers are also welcome to attend.

Managing diabetes can present challenges to daily living, and making changes can be tough. Diabetes PATH is a fun, interactive workshop conducted by two trained leaders—at least one has diabetes—who run small group discussions and provide user-friendly course materials.

The Diabetes Personal Action Toward Health, or PATH, classes will be offered at Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting July 12, in the Zieger Administrative and Education Building, Classroom A/B, 28050 Grand River. Other Beaumont Health locations throughout Metro Detroit offer Diabetes PATH classes, too. For information about other locations, go to beaumont.org/classes-events.

Participants gain hands-on experience learning to manage all aspects of their diabetes, including communicating better with family and friends, relaxation, understanding nutrition labels, handling difficult emotions and healthy meal planning. They will also create personal action plans and set achievable goals.

The Diabetes PATH workshops are appropriate for people newly diagnosed, as well as for those who have been living with type 2 diabetes for years and wish to reduce symptoms and doctor visits and become better self-managers.
