Most people that have a lawn, also have to battle crab-grass. It's evil and invades the lush thick turf that we all want to have. To battle crab-grass, the most effective method is to apply a pre-emergent before the crab-grass seeds can fully germinate.
Lawn owners in Southeastern Michigan should plan on putting down a quality pre-emergent sometime between now and May 15th. We may have a little longer window for treatment this year because of the cold spring we have had, but it is very important to get it down early enough to be effective.
Not too early though. Most pre-emergent formulations are effective for about eight weeks. If the pre-emergent is applied too early, it will have lost its effectiveness by the time the seeds germinate. Experts tell us that crab-grass seeds can germinate when the night-time soil temperatures reach 50 degrees for three days in a row. We are getting close to that mark. If you see weeds growing in the cracks of your sidewalk or near your home, the time is right to apply.
Purchase you pre-emergent now and have it ready when the time is right in the weeks ahead.
