A Penny at a Time, Farmington Area Residents Give $1,024 to Make Holidays Brighter

The "Pennies from Heaven" campaign was sponsored by the Farmington Goodfellows and O&E Media as part of USA Weekend's Make a Difference Day.

Farmington area residents donated $1,024 in pennies to the Farmington Area Goodfellows as part of USA Weekend’s annual Make a Difference Day and a partnership between the Goodfellows and Observer & Eccentric Media to make the holidays brighter for some area families.

Kathleen Immergluck had been running out of places to store pennies she has been collecting, her husband, Bill, told the newspaper. After they saw the story about the “pennies from Heaven” drive at the Farmington Hills fire station in the Farmington Observer, part of the O&E Media group, they “decided it was a good place to put the money.”

The collections will be used to help the Goodfellows Holiday Assistance Program, whose goal is to ensure that no child or senior citizen goes “without a Christmas.”

Fannie Tully of Farmington Hills had been collecting pennies for nine years, and decided that donating them to the cause was a way to give back after her own children were helped by the Goodfellows many years ago.

Over four hours, residents poured into the Farmington Fire Station and poured out their containers of coins.

Farmington Area Goodfellows President Dave Kenerson said he was “overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.”

“I had no idea, no preconceived notions, of how much would be donated,” he said. “This is a very pleasant surprise.”
