Does your Veterinarian suggest or ask you if you want to have your pet’s medications prescribed to a pharmacy instead of them filling them? Have you ever asked - I never did.
I read an article in the Whole Dog Journal about money saving comparison shopping for dog’s prescriptions. Curious, since I had never thought of this, I asked staff and customers if and where they had their dog’s prescriptions filled. Several (not all) of our customers take their pet’s medications to human pharmacies, Meijers, Costco, Walgreens and more! They comparison shop their Pet Medications!
One of my employee's dogs was injured at home, her Veterinarian wrote a prescription and TOLD her to shop around for the best price. She took her dog’s prescription for an antibiotic to the Meijer Pharmacy and they gave it to her for free - they had the free generic brand at that location! I had at least two customers who said the same thing Meijers did the same for their dog’s generic antibiotic - it was free.

I've done just a tiny bit of investigating and found out there are many discount programs available for pet medications - AAA Membership, Costco Membership Prescription Program, and Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. Target has expanded the scope of its pharmacies and started offering animal-specific medications under its PetRX program and they even have a great online list of meds they carry.
So – bottom line – consider asking your Veterinarian to call in your dog’s prescriptions to a pharmacy of your choosing or provide you with a written prescription so you can do a little price comparison!
