Police Investigating I-696 Shooting In Farmington Hills

Michigan State Police said shots were fired after a pickup truck abruptly changed lanes on the freeway in front of an SUV.

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI — Michigan State Police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting that happened on Interstate 696 in Oakland County.

A caller told police that a white Dodge Ram 2500 was driving in front of him in the middle lane on westbound Interstate 696 near Farmington Road at 8 p.m., police said.

As they approached the Farmington Road overpass, the pickup truck abruptly changed lanes in front of a red Chevrolet Equinox, which was driving in the left lane on westbound Interstate 696, police said.

Immediately after, the caller told police he heard "popping" noises followed by what sounded like metal striking metal, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck then pulled over to the side of the freeway and called 911, telling authorities he was just shot at from behind while driving west in the left lane on Interstate 696 near Farmington Road, police said. Officials said the pickup truck driver also captured the SUV's license plate.

State troopers examined the pickup truck and found damage to the truck's rear window and windshield, police said. Officials also said they found a shell casting on the freeway.

Officials tracked down the red SUV and interviewed its driver, police said. There were no bullet holes or damage to the SUV, police said.

Both vehicles were towed to the Michigan State Police post as officials continue their investigation.
