Popular Farmington Restaurant Emerges from Bankruptcy

John Cowley & Sons is back on secure financial footing after reorganization, owners say.

FARMINGTON, MI – A popular downtown Farmington restaurant has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

John Cowley & Sons said in a statement Sunday that the structure of financing required to open the two-story gastro pub and Irish restaurant in 2002 and the death of founders John and Mary Cowley in 2013 lead to the refinancing.

“We would have preferred to accomplish this on our terms but circumstances dictated that we use the Chapter 11 option to secure a lender and protect the assets and the business while operating,” according to the statement.

The business filed for bankruptcy five months ago. The financial restructuring makes it possible for a third generation of the Cowley family to continue the business, a mainstay in downtown Farmington since 1972.

Brendan Cowley, John Cowley’s grandson, and his wife, Amy, are the restaurant managers.

The business lost some customers during the five-month reorganization, according to the statement, but all suppliers have been paid and the restaurant’s 30 employees have been paid without

interruption.

“Our business financing is secure and we are now positioned to participate in Farmington’s growth goals for the future,” the statement said.
