Southfield Student For Bringing Gun To School: Police

Police said school administrators received​ a tip that the student was carrying a pistol in his coat pocket​.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Police arrested a 17-year-old Southfield Regional Academic student for bringing a gun to the school Wednesday afternoon, Southfield police said.

Police said school administrators received a tip that the student was carrying a pistol in his coat pocket.

Officers at the school took the gun from the student and escorted him to the office, police said.

The student told police he found the gun, which had three bullets in its magazine but none in the chamber, police said.

"Administrators took immediate action and the Southfield Police Department School Resource Officer acted promptly to confiscate the weapon," a news release said. "The student was taken into custody by the Southfield Police Department without incident and the matter has been turned over to law enforcement."

Police continue to investigate the incident.
