Two Veterans Day Observances in Farmington Area

A first-ever Farmington Hills Police Department ceremony takes place the afternoon of Nov. 11; that evening, a champagne toast salutes vets.

The Farmington Hills Police Department will honor its veterans during its first-ever Military Service Recognition Award ceremony to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Later Wednesday, veterans from all wars and conflicts that have taken place from 1943 through today will speak at a special Veterans Day ceremony hosted by American Legion Groves-Walker Post 346. That event takes place at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Club Room, 31775 Grand River in downtown Farmington. The event is open to the public.

The police department’s ceremony will be held in the Police Department Roll Call Room located at Police Headquarters, 31655 Eleven Mile Road. Chief Charles Nebus will present employees who have served in the armed forces with the Department’s Military Service Recognition Award.

At the American Legion-sponsored ceremony, a bugler will honor those veterans who have been lost and are listed as missing in action. A champagne toast and light refreshments will be provided.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
