Ferndale Police Make Arrest in Puff Factory Burglary

FERNDALE, MI – A 35-year-old Detroit man has been arrested in last week’s burglary of the Puff Factory tobacco and smoking accessories shop, Ferndale police said Thursday.

James Anthony Chatman, who Ferndale police Detective Lt. William Wilson said was being investigated for similar crimes around Metro Detroit, was arrested about 3:45 a.m. Saturday after authorities tracked him to the Renaissance Motel at Seven Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.

Police were called to the Puff Factory, 750 W. Nine Mile Road, when a burglary alarm was tripped about 12:45 a.m. Friday, March 18. Surveillance video showed the suspect removing money from a cash register, according to police.

Chatman was arraigned in Ferndale 43rd District Court on burglary-forced entry of a non residence and remained in the Oakland County Jail Thursday morning on $50,000/surety bond.

The Southfield Police Department and Western Wayne County Community Response Team assisted in the investigation, Wilson said.
