​Fenton Veteran Honored for #StillServing in Community

Fenton veteran Scott Maker is being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military.

A 30-year US Marine Corps veteran, Maker is concluding four consecutive years as commander of VFW Post #4642 in Linden. He is an elected trustee on the Linden Community Schools Board of Education where he has served for 14 years including nine as president and two as vice president. He has served in leadership roles on formal and ad hoc committees supporting school boosters and parent organizations, civic activities, his church and with his employers, Veterans Initiative Program. In addition, at area schools Maker volunteers as a guest speaker on veterans related topics and has spent more than 100 hours per year as an announcer for varsity athletics.

Maker chose a career in the military because he viewed it as the highest calling to serve our nation. He considers interacting positively with those immediately around us and improving our own communities as the greatest way a person can make an impact, noting that what others see in our actions may encourage them to act.

According to the 2021 Veterans Civic Health Index, veterans average nearly 30
percent more volunteer hours per year and outpace civilians 15 percent in
charitable donations. Additionally, nearly 40 percent more veterans
belong to a group working on community issues and veterans are more like
to be registered to vote (7 percent) and have recently voted (6 percent).
