📰 News we're reading

1. Grand Rapids DDA approves $50K for storage program for homeless residents (mlive.com) — Downtown Grand Rapids' DDA has approved up to $50,000 to help keep a storage program for people experiencing homelessness running at 40 Williams St. SW, filling half of a key budget gap. City officials say the secure bins protect IDs and medications while reducing belongings in parks and sidewalks, though one board member opposed the funding as outside the DDA's mission.

2. Grand Rapids man seeks return of stolen e-bike, his only transportation option (wzzm13.com) — A Grand Rapids resident is asking for help after his e-bike, his only way to get around town since losing his driver's license for medical reasons, was stolen from outside his home. Police are reviewing Ring camera footage of two suspects in a white pickup, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department.

3. More visitors are bringing money into Grand Rapids, including a stop by Five Finger Death Punch (fox17online.com) — Visitor numbers to Grand Rapids are climbing, with hotel stays and summer tourism up and the new Acrisure Amphitheater drawing concertgoers downtown. Local restaurants like Nagoya Hibachi Sushi are already seeing more weekday business, and future projects such as riverfront trails, a soccer stadium, and restoring the rapids are expected to bring even more spending and foot traffic into the city.

4. Five Documenters Stories That Show Why Local Accountability Starts with Paying Attention — City Bureau (citybureau.org) — Grand Rapids residents are getting a clearer look at how city dollars are spent, thanks to local Documenters who translated the proposed FY2027 budget into a plain-language breakdown of funding for parks, housing, lead hazard control, and public safety. The story places Grand Rapids alongside cities like Tulsa and Los Angeles to show how trained community members attending public meetings can turn dense government information into practical, accessible knowledge for their neighbors.

5. World's longest stringed instrument to transform Grand Rapids bridge for ArtPrize (mlive.com) — A massive Earth Harp performance will turn the Pearl Street Bridge into a playable musical sculpture for ArtPrize's 2026 opening night on September 18 in downtown Grand Rapids. The internationally recognized instrument will anchor a competition expected to feature more than 1,000 entries, reinforcing ArtPrize's new city-led era and drawing residents and visitors into the heart of downtown.
