📰 News we're reading

• AHC Hospitality lands 5-year, no-bid DeVos Place food and beverage contract (mlive.com) — A regional authority has approved a five-year, no-bid contract keeping AHC Hospitality in charge of food and beverage service at DeVos Place, with terms expected to boost the venue's finances by up to $500,000 a year. The deal, which extends a decades-long relationship, sparked questions from former Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and event organizers about food quality and opportunities for more Grand Rapids-based vendors.

• This Grand Rapids homemaker was the first-ever woman to win a city commission seat in 1961 (mlive.com) — Grand Rapids residents are reminded of Evangeline M. Lamberts, the homemaker who became the city's first woman commissioner in 1961, breaking ground for future female leaders. The story traces her tenure, the challenges she faced, and how later commissioners and Mayor Rosalynn Bliss continued expanding women's representation across the city's wards and at City Hall.

• Amtrak on the Fast Track: New Trains Coming to Michigan (michigannewssource.com) — Grand Rapids riders on Amtrak's Pere Marquette line to Chicago can expect new trainsets as part of a $2 billion federal investment in passenger rail. The funding will refresh all three Michigan routes, potentially add seats, and may help lower ticket prices, while also building a major new maintenance facility in Chicago to support Midwest service.
