Back-to-Back Aces Beat 'Astronomical' Golf Odds

An adjuster for the Hole in One Association can't even compute the odds of the feat Michigan couple accomplished on the golf course Sunday.

The odds of a hole-in-one aren’t great – about 25,000-to-1 for amateur golfers like Tony and Janet Blundy.

What the husband-and-wife team from Portland, MI, accomplished Sunday is a head-scratcher for the statisticians, though. They shot consecutive, back-to-back aces at the same hole at the Ledge Meadows Golf Course in Grand Ledge.

Here’s how big of a deal that is, an adjustor for the National Hole-in-One Association told the Lansing State Journal:

The Blundys beat the 1.3 million-to-1 odds of two amateur golfers, playing in the same round as a foursome, hitting aces in the same round. And they knocked the 26-million-to-1 odds of consecutive aces at the same hole into a sand trap somewhere along the PGA tour.

But what about a married couple, playing in a twosome instead of a foursome, accomplishing that?

“Astronomical,” the adjuster said, telling the newspaper he didn’t know how to begin computing the odds of that happening.

Tony Blundy said witnesses verified the rare feat.

“If nobody would have been around, nobody would ever believe us,” he said. “We’ve been laughing about it every time we think about it. It’s so unbelievable that it could happen.”

Janet Blundy’s ace was the second of her career. She said her competitive spirit surged when her husband stepped up to the men’s tee. “It was just like, ‘Hee hee, you’re not gonna get one up on me,’” she told the newspaper.

And then his 7-iron shot hit the cup from 135 yards out.

“It was out of this world,” Janet Blundy said. “Out of control. It was like, ‘Oh. My. God. I cannot believe that just happened!’”

She stepped up to the women’s tee with her pitching wedge. “You’re gonna be really mad at me when I put mine in,” she reportedly told her husband.

Her aim was as sharp as her gibe.

From 110 yards out, the shot rolled into the same hole.

“It’s surreal. I keep expecting to wake up and it’s a dream,” Janet Blundy said. “If I do, I’m gonna be mad.”
