State Senator to Talk About Path from Prison of Public Service

Topics for question-and-answer discussion include the school to prison pipeline, how to support young men of colors

State Sen. Bert Johnson, D-Detroit, who served time in prison, will share his journey to public service and take questions during a question-and-answer discussion in Grosse Pointe Park Wednesday.

RSVPs are requested for the program, “Bert Johnson Unchained: Where Politics and Real Life Intersect,” which takes place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at The Jungle Juice Bar, 14929 Charlevoix, in Grosse Pointe Park. Admission is free.

Topics Johnson will address include: the school to prison pipeline, how to support young men of color, his journey to manhood and how he found his purpose. The program will conclude with a question and answer session.

“It might not be our time,” Johnson said in a video promoting the program, “but it’s our turn.”

Johnson represents Michigan’s 2nd District, which includes Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and the five Grosse Pointe communities. He previously served two terms as a state representative.
