Congressman Mike Rogers Now on Twitter

Republican whose district includes Brighton and Hartland can be followed @RepMikeRogers.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers was already on Facebook with nearly 7,500 likes and now he's expanding his social media to Twitter, according to a news release from his office emailed Tuesday.

The feed — @RepMikeRogers — already has more than 250 followers as of 3:20 p.m.

In addition, the Howell Republican also is following more than 70 Twitter accounts ranging from other politicians such as Speaker of the House John Boehner and Gov. Rick Snyder to media outlets including CNN and the Detroit Free Press.

Rogers said he's excited about starting the account and sees it as another way to connect with constitutients.

"Twitter allows me to easily stay in touch with my constituents," he said in the release. "I will regularly discuss issues of the day including my efforts to strengthen Michigan’s economy and allow the private sector to create jobs.  I will I also talk about my work as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and share important national security updates."

So far, Rogers has three tweets, including retweeting Boehner about government regulation and posting a similar tweet.

On his Facebook page, the announcement to his new account drew some critical reactions.

"Why would we believe another medium for you NOT to listen to would make any difference," wrote Jay Peltier.

But supporters also defended the congressman.

"You're doing a great job and I couldn't be more proud of how you are helping to keep us safe," posted Linda Burns Lewis. "They don't understand the behind the scenes that most of us don't see."
