1. Howell tied with 8 other cities for 15th in Michigan scam reports in July (livingstontoday.com) — Howell residents reported six scams to the Better Business Bureau's Scam Tracker in July, double the previous month, with documented losses of at least $1,809. Online purchase schemes were the biggest problem, including one $1,700 trailer purchase that never materialized. Locals are urged to use BBB Scam Tracker to research suspicious offers and share their own experiences. 
2. Community Catalysts Announce New Attainable Single-Family Home Program (whmi.com) — Lower- and moderate-income residents who live or work in Livingston County will soon be able to apply for four new attainable homes planned on Burkhart Road in Howell Township. Community Catalysts' Bethel Homes program will sell two- and three-bedroom houses around $250,000 using a community land trust model to keep them affordable long term. Applications open September 30, with first-come, first-served selection.
3. Howell Tavern closes after short-lived tenure on Grand River Avenue (bnd.com) — A familiar spot on East Grand River just east of downtown has gone dark again, as Howell Tavern closed after less than five months in business. Owners cited declining sales and staffing struggles despite efforts to refine the menu and service. The building has now seen several short-lived restaurants, fueling local talk that the location may be "cursed."
4. 36 Hispanic students enrolled at Highlander Way Middle School in 2024-25 (livingstontoday.com) — Highlander Way Middle School in the Howell Public Schools district enrolled 36 Hispanic students in 2024-25, a slight increase from the previous year and 4.6% of its 789 students. The report also notes Howell High School leads the district in Hispanic enrollment and places these trends in the context of statewide demographic shifts.
5. Detroit's Cinema Revival: Independent Theaters Thrive Amid Cultural Renaissance (wrif.com) — Metro Detroit's independent movie scene is surging, and Howell gets a nod through the Historic Howell Theatre's participation in upcoming cinema symposiums. A new series of "New Wave" film discussions in Detroit will bring together theaters from Ann Arbor, Farmington, Howell and beyond to share strategies for thriving. Organizers say audiences are rediscovering the camaraderie of watching films together.
