• Defendant in US-41 motorcycle deaths case not offered plea deal, prosecutor confirms (uppermichiganssource.com) — Houghton County residents following the fatal US-41 motorcycle crash case should know prosecutors have confirmed no plea deal will be offered to the driver, Sze Wenn Tiang. She faces charges including two counts of moving violation causing death, with a pre-trial hearing set for October 23 in 97th District Court as the case continues through the local legal system.
   

• TV6 Investigates: 'You can never be too careful,' UP water systems combat cyberattacks (uppermichiganssource.com) — Houghton's public works director says the city is actively training and upgrading systems to guard its water infrastructure against cyber threats, alongside other Upper Peninsula communities. The report explains how utilities in Marquette, Escanaba, and Houghton are tightening digital and physical safeguards, coordinating with federal and state agencies, and focusing on both cybersecurity and aging pipes to keep local drinking water safe.
   

• Francis 'Frank' Huegel (keweenawreport.com) — Longtime engineer and Michigan Tech graduate Francis "Frank" Huegel, a World War II Navy Seabee veteran, has died at 101, with local services planned in Houghton. A funeral Mass will be held October 20 at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, followed by burial at Forest Hill Cemetery, where he will rest beside his late wife near where they first met.
