Golf Macomb: Sycamore Hills Golf Course

Aside from being a true Macomb Township golfing gem, Sycamore Hills Golf Course, located on North Avenue just north of 21 Mile Road, truly has something to offer players of every skill level.

"I think that's what I like about this place so much," said Doug Goodson, 45, a regular on the greens at Sycamore Hills. "I can play here with my buddies. I can play here with my wife. I can play here with my younger kids. Everyone gets a good challenge and a good round of golf."

Four sets of tee boxes, and 27-championship golf holes, do give players of all skill levels a chance to test their game while enjoying a course that's both fair and challenging.

The North Course at Sycamore Hills ranges from just more than 3,100 yards from the back tees to 2,441 yards from the front tee boxes and–like all three courses at the facility–presents golfers with club choices on nearly every hole.

The South Course, which clocks in at 3,149 yards from the tips, 3,3035 from the blue tees, 2,864 from the white tees, and 2,493 yards from the red rees, cuts its way through tall trees, placing a premium on accuracy and club choice. 

Meanwhile, the final of the three nines at Sycamore Hills is the West Course.

The West Course is the longest of the three (ranging from 3,216 yards to 2,629 yards), and includes the picturesque ninth hole and the challenging par-3 second hole.

Admittedly, the course isn't the longest in the area–not even close–but that doesn't mean it's a track that should be overlooked. 

In fact, the length is the most appealing part of the course in my mind. 

Sycamore is one of the rare courses still in existence that actually makes a player think their way around the course some. 

Should you hit driver off the tee or an iron?

Should you lay-up or let it rip on that par-5?

Sycamore Hills presents these questions more than a few times to players, and it's refreshing in an era where golf courses rely on 7,000-plus yardages to overpower players, not force them into course-management decisions and pin-point shot-making.

That said, the course is still plenty long enough for the vast majority of players (men and women). 

Along with the trio of top-notch courses, Sycamore Hills also has a driving range, practice green, fully stocked pro shop, and offers lessons to those looking to both learn the game or shave those few extra strokes off their score.

And, when you're done with your round, the facility also features a restaurant, lounge and snack bar.
