📰 News we're reading

• Ingham County officials planning to make 911 center part of sheriff's office (bnd.com) — Ingham County leaders meeting in Mason are moving to permanently place the county's 911 call center under the sheriff's office, a change that could happen immediately if commissioners approve it in February. For Mason residents, that means the same 0.8‑mill 911 tax and phone surcharge, but potentially better staffing, less overtime, and a new leadership structure for emergency dispatch.

• Timely Wheat Planting Remains Key to Protecting Yield Potential (grainjournal.com) — Field trials at Michigan State University's research farm in Mason show that planting winter wheat near the Hessian fly-safe date is far more important for yield than simply boosting seeding rates later. For Mason-area growers, the research suggests prioritizing timely planting, adjusting soybean harvest logistics if needed, and using about 1.8 million seeds per acre when planting runs late.
