What is Hygiene for Hope?

  • Hygiene for Hope is a HOSA-led initiative that began after we realized something simple: people think they understand hygiene, but often only understand it at a surface level.
  • It’s not just about knowing habits like brushing your teeth or washing your hands — it’s about actually keeping up with them consistently.
  • That’s where our focus comes in: turning basic awareness into habits people actually follow.

The Problem:

  • In the beginning we assumed that hygiene was something everyone understood…
  • But after surveying our community, we found that many basic habits weren’t being practiced regularly.
  • This showed us that the issue wasn’t just awareness — it was a lack of reinforcement in everyday life.

How WE Made A Difference:

  • We began with social media, specifically Instagram, sharing simple, relatable content about hygiene habits people often overlook.
  • This helped us reach 58,000+ people, proving that when information feels relevant, people actually engage.
  • To make that impact more consistent, we brought awareness into real spaces through flyers placed in schools and community areas.
  • Instead of one-time messages, these became daily reminders.

Taking A Step Forward:

  • We also connected directly with students through
  • presentations, school-wide spirit days, and hygiene assembly lines involving 450+ participants.
  • These experiences helped turn hygiene from something people hear about into something they actually think about.

From Awareness to Action:

  • While awareness was important, we realized it wasn’t enough on its own.
  • So we assembled and distributed 750+ hygiene kits to organizations like HOPE Shelters, Grace Centers of Hope, Another Day Resource Center, and the University of Michigan.
  • This experience made it clear that many people want to maintain hygiene — they just don’t always have access to the resources.

Expanding Through Media:

  • To reach more people, we created a website and launched a podcast to continue these conversations in a more accessible way.
  • These platforms allowed us to share our message more openly and connect with a broader audience beyond our school.
  • The website also features outreach highlights, key takeaways from healthcare professionals, hygiene tips, and FAQs to help guide users.
  • Most importantly, we integrated an AI-powered chatbot that allows users to ask questions and receive factual tips and practices they can implement in their daily lives to build healthier routines.

City-Wide Impact:

  • Our work also led to the opportunity to connect with local leadership and present at a Novi City Council meeting & podcast.

  • This allowed us to bring hygiene awareness to a larger, city-wide audience and expand our impact beyond student spaces.

What Does This Mean?

  • Hygiene isn’t just a routine — it directly impacts health, confidence, and daily life.
  • Small habits, when practiced consistently, can make a big difference.
  • And by making hygiene something people actually think about and talk about, we can create lasting change.
