Novi High School Band Boosters Host Fanfare Competition

The band's first competition of the season is also it's largest fundraiser.

The Band Boosters hosted 10 metro-Detroit high school bands Saturday at Fanfare, an annual Michigan Competing Band Association (MCBA) competition that also serves as the Band Booster’s largest fundraiser of the year.

This event marked the band’s first competition of the fall season, which includes October competitions at Woodhaven, Milford and Plymouth-Canton.

“The band is exactly where they should be at this point in the year. We have the first three tunes ready for this competition with the fourth one coming along,” said Novi Director of Bands Mark Hourigan.

The Novi High School Band performance for this marching season includes four songs from Sting’s 2010 Symphonicities album, and according to Hourigan, the show is built around this “captivating” music, which includes a variety of musical genres. The band's final song is Sting’s well-known “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.”

The Band’s Colorguard has a different flag for each of the four songs with the color gold displayed in each flag to visually unifying the show.

Clarinet Section Leader and Novi High School senior Evan Nielson said, “Overall, I think our show went really well and I’m proud of the band and our score. Mr. Hourigan told us our score of over 69 was the highest score at Fanfare he can remember. I’m excited to get the closer [song] out on the field and think it will boost our score.”

Since Novi hosted the event, Fanfare is considered an exhibition for the NHS Band, meaning that although the band is judged at the event, its score does not count toward eligibility for State Finals.

Novi High School is hoping to once again qualify to perform and compete at the MCBA State Championship contest held at Ford Field in Detroit on Nov. 5. Competing high school marching bands are divided by school size into “Flights” with Novi competing in Flight I for the largest schools.

The band’s next competition is at Woodhaven High School on Oct. 1. In addition to fall competitions, the Novi High School Marching Band also performs at all of the Novi home varsity football games. For more information, view the band’s website.
