Two in Custody After Taxi Driver Reports Suspicious Fare

Derrick Jerome Campbell was arraigned Monday after he allegedly helped a customer of the cab company where he worked dispose of a body.

A 21-year-old Ypsilanti City woman’s body was discovered under a bush in the 2700 block of Golfside Road in Ypsilanti Township Saturday morning after a cab driver reported a suspicious fare.

Two men are in custody in connection with the incident, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release, the Detroit Free Press reports. One of them, Derrick Jerome Campbell, 46, was arraigned on charges of concealing a person’s death and failure to report the discovery of a body.

A second suspect, whose name has not been released, is due in court Tuesday.

After the discovery the body of Mira Dressel, 21, authorities pieced together what they think happened. A customer picked up by the BWB Transportation cab driver in Ypsilanti City Saturday morning carried “an unknown object” to the rear of the cab.

The driver became suspicious and contacted Campbell, her boss, who spoke with the customer, The Ypsilanti Courier reports. As Campbell and the other man removed the object from the car, the driver reported to 911 that she saw what appeared to be a human body.

Dressel’s cause of death hasn’t been determined ,and the investigation of the events leading up to the discovery of her body is continuing, according to reports.
