Christmas in Action Volunteers Help Local Low-Income Elderly and Disabled Homeowners
Even though it was the 27th of April and the warm sun was shining, it was Christmas Day for one disabled resident of
Oakland Township. Over twenty volunteers with Christmas in Action spent a full day replacing windows and doors, building a wheelchair ramp and making other much needed repairs to the woman’s more than century old home. Christmas in Action is a community volunteer organization
united around the common goal of completing free home repairs for low income elderly or physically disabled homeowners. Since 1972, Christmas in Action has
repaired over 9,000 homes. The national 501(c) (3) nonprofit agency has successfully implemented the "tried and true" idea of "neighbor helping neighbor.” Christmas in Action is organized into local affiliates who
work with community volunteers, church groups, civic organizations and businesses to help low-income senior and physically disabled home owners remain
safe, warm and independent. The Oakland
Township residence was just one of four homes being refurbished by volunteers with Christmas in Action’s Northeast Council. Addison Oaks Supervisor Bruce Pearson explained that the Oakland County affiliate has a major work day on the last Saturday of April each year. Oakland Township Supervisor Terry Gonser took a break from hanging a new front door on the Lake George Road home to say how much the group appreciated local business owners who donated tools, supplies and food for hungry volunteers. “It is rewarding” Supervisor Gonser continued “to be able to help someone right here in Oakland Township.”
