Orion Center

Tigers fans know that Opening Day can be a bit dicey.  Heck, we have attended games where we had to
brush snow off the seats!  On other
occasions we arrived at the ballpark and were given complimentary hand
warmers.  Opening Day in Detroit is like
a holiday and, as such, ardent, avid fans can put up with a few inconveniences
to watch their favorite team start the season.

This year I
avoided the crowds, the expensive parking fees and enjoyed an afternoon
watching the Tigers at the Orion Center in Lake Orion.  Over a hundred fans were bedecked in their
Tigers regalia while we watched our World Series bound Tigers once again become
Yankee killers!  Our Boys of Summer
emerged from their homerun hitless streak as Prince Fielder lofted two taters
into the stands.  Not to be outdone Alex
Avila “went yard” with a moonshot into the upper deck in right field.  Pitcher Drew Smyly pitched a masterful game
in relief – no hits – no runs – no walks – five strikeouts.  The Tigers thus ended the day with an 8-3
victory over the injury prone Yankees.

Watching
the game on two large screen TVs at the Orion Center was a hoot. The room was
decorated with Tiger memorabilia and the Center staff had grilled loads of hot
dogs.  There were peanuts on all the
tables and of course an ample supply of nachos, popcorn, potato chips and
lemonade.  And we didn’t have to brush
any snow off our seats!

and kudos to the Orion Center staff for a wonderful Opening Day.  I look forward to future events at the Center
including a couple more of those delicious grilled hot dogs.  And maybe next year all of us can master the
wave!  Go Tigers!
