The Battle is on for Lake Orion Fifth Graders!
This Saturday, March 16, over two hundred fifth graders will compete in Orion Library's Battle of the Books, and we librarians are ready for you!
Fifth graders, I hope you're ready. The Battle of the Books is on for this Saturday, March 16, and the Orion Youth Services Librarians can't wait to crack some (book) spines!
Every year, the Orion Township Public Library's Youth Services department hosts a Battle of the Books for Lake Orion's fifth graders. Teams of fifth graders read the books chosen by the librarians and answer questions in a quiz show format. Each team consists of 3, 4, or 5 fifth graders with an adult coach. The preparation for the Battle begins in November when the official list of 15 books is released. Between November and March, teams study the books and prepare themselves for the hardest questions we librarians can cook up.
And now, Battle of the Books 2013 is upon us. The Scripps Middle School gymnasium will be flooded with crazily-attired fifth graders with team names like Bookie Wookies, Tutu Nerds, and ChefBoyIRead. At 1:00 the Battle begins and 50 questions later, one team will triumph with the most correct answers. Who that team is will not be revealed until the Battle of the Books Awards Ceremony at the Lake Orion High School Auditorium on Tuesday, March 19. There, all the teams will be celebrated for their accomplishment. All will meet Ruth McNally Barshaw, an author/illustrator whose book Elllie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel they have studied. One team will earn the honor of having their name forever grace the walls of Orion Township Public Library on a Battle of the Books plaque.

Last year, the winning team was The Word Nerds, five brave students from Stadium Drive Elementary. Who will win this year? Who will take on the 50 mind-numblingly difficult questions the librarians have written about 15 fantastic books and come out on top? If you ask the librarians, we'll tell you who the real winners are: any kids who found a new book to enjoy. For us, that means all our Battlers have already won.
