Community Corner

Culver's "Scoop for Hearts" family fun night

Culver’s and Oakland County

Parks Bring Fun to the Community while Helping Kids in Need

(Clarkston,

Michigan)…Family-owned Culver’s of Clarkston and Oakland County Parks and

Recreation are teaming up once again to sponsor “Scoop for Hearts”—a free

community event at Culver’s on Tuesday, July 16 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Family-friendly entertainment will be provided, including giant inflatables

with slides and bounce house courtesy of Oakland County Parks, a Stars &

Stripes Play Zone, face painting and balloon twisting, fire engine tour, and

more. Culver’s will donate 10% of food sales to the Michigan Chapter of The Children’s

Heart Foundation, which funds life-saving research for children born with

congenital heart defects. Sponsors hope participants will dine at Culver’s or

treat themselves to a scoop of fresh frozen custard as a sweet way to help

kids.

“This is our

annual Day of Giving at Culver’s,” says owner/operator Kevin Powers. “We’re

grateful to have Oakland County Parks support for this event so that we can

provide entertainment for families at no cost. And we’re happy to be able to

give back to an organization that’s making a difference in children’s lives.”

Powers is also the father of a four-year-old son with a congenital heart defect

who has undergone two open-heart surgeries to repair his heart.

Congenital heart

defects (CHD) occur in one out of every 100 babies, making them the most common

type of birth defect. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most deadly.

Twenty percent of children born with a CHD will not reach their first birthday,

and survivors often face surgical intervention, have physical limitations, and

must receive life-long cardiac care. The Children’s Heart Foundation is the

nation’s leading non-profit exclusively funding the most-promising research to

help advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart

defects. The Michigan Chapter was formed in 2010 with the inaugural “Scoop for

Hearts” event. More about the non-profit can be found at http://michigan.childrensheartfoundation.org.

“Our son is

doing very well today, but for other children who are not so fortunate, more

and better research needs to be done to help them,” says Powers’ wife, Sally.

“We hope families will have lots of fun at the event and enjoy a good meal so

that we can give back to this important cause.”
