You’ll love the NOCB Yuletide Celebration Concert On Sunday, December 2nd, 2012, the North Oakland Concert Band will present a refreshing and holiday-spirit-inspiring concert of seasonal music for the concert band. The program entitled “Yuletide Celebration” will be presented at 6:30 pm at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, located at 2700 Waldon Road in Orion Township, Michigan. The program features a wide variety of holiday music from the classical repertoire to popular carols, to a jazz rendition of a Bing Crosby signature Christmas tune. Several small ensembles drawn from the band will perform prelude music for the seating audience starting at 6:00 pm. Before the holiday season rushes in with all of the hustle and bustle of shopping and travel, take a moment to relax and get into the spirit of the season with this concert of Christmas music written or arranged for the concert wind band. Under the conducting of musical director Annette Kline, the North Oakland Concert Band will ring in the season with many familiar favorites and several lesser-known classics. The concert begins with the rousing Procession of the Nobles by Rimsky-Korsakov with its trumpet fanfares and cascading woodwinds. The brass section is again featured in Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sonata pian e forte, an expressive Renaissance-era composition with contrasting dynamics from two choirs of brass. Ding Dong! Merrily on High will be played by the band soon after, another piece from the Renaissance, a dance tune, which was given Christmas lyrics and became a holiday song. No Christmas season would be complete without the dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. These and the Miniature Overture from the same ballet were arranged for concert band and present a challenging work for the ensemble. Our own George Sinnott will give us his jazz interpretation of The Christmas Song on the alto sax and his liquid tones will have you smelling those chestnuts roasting on a open fire. Join in the finale of the concert as the band leads the audience in a rendition of White Christmas. The North Oakland Concert Band has been providing free concerts to the local community for over 30 years. Based in Lake Orion, the band members travel from all over the Metro Detroit area to play in this top-level community band under the direction of Annette Kline.
