They say music it the universal language, but why? Families will learn what makes some instruments more common than others and why some noises sound strange or get us excited. We will explore how cultural transmission influences music and families will get to make their own instruments.

Each year the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History partners with public libraries all over Southeastern Michigan to present three fun, family workshops about science. This year, to tie in with the Understanding Race Project and the traveling exhibition RACE: Are we so different?(February 2013-June 2013), we are focusing exploring how biology, anthropology, physics, geography and chemistry all play a part in race and culture.
