
The Oakland Phragmites and Invasive Species Task Force is hosting two Phragmites workshops in May, including one in Oakland Township where Bob Williams will be speaking. It is open to residents of Oakland Township and immediate communities. Content is geared at homeowners, homeowner associations and business property manager where Phragmites is a concern in wetland and retention pond areas.
Workshop topics include:
- Learn how invasive plants lower property values and Phragmites specifically is a fire hazard.
- How to identify Phragmites and other invasive plants
- Local efforts to control Phragmites
- Do-It-Yourself removal options
- Meet and greet local organizations fighting invasive species
- Sign up with contractors experienced at controlling invasive species
A similar event will take place 9a.m.-11a.m on Saturday, May 11 at Independence Township Hall on Waldon Road (west of Sashabaw). This workshop is presented by Ernie Kafcas, phragmites consultant and retired MDNR wildlife biologist.
