In Brief: Parks and Recreation Commission Discusses Improving Website Presence

Better signs, branding will let residents know what parks offer, members say.

The on Wednesday discussed improving the parks and recreation portion of the township website to better advertise to residents what the parks have to offer.

The commission, which met the building, had discussions centered around organization, goals, contracts and reports.

A matrix plan with various organizational and management items for the Parks and Recreation Department was discussed. Some of the projects include the possibility of the Parks and Recreation Department improving their portion of the township’s website, branding Parks and Recreation and increasing the department's volunteer and program list.

Parks and Recreation Director Becky McLogan noted that Oakland Township Manager Jim Creech didn’t want the Parks and Recreation Department's website to be separate from the township's website, but she said he wasn’t opposed to a makeover to Parks and Recreation's portion of the site. One goal is to “create a stronger awareness by branding" so that “when you go to an Oakland Township park, you know you’re in an Oakland Township park,” McLogan said.

“I think our residents are aware of our programming and special events but not all of the parks we have here,” she said.

Developing consistent and well-designed signs is a good place to start with branding, McLogan said. She noted the department would like to begin looking into that initiative within six to 12 months.

A closed session for the consideration of acquiring property concluded the meeting.
