Happy Memorial Day! I'm writing to you from Puerto Rico, where I'm vacationing with family. My blog earlier this evening didn't work, so I'm trying again - typing away on my phone!
Last summer I interned in midtown Detroit and got to know the area well. Much to my surprise, Detroit can be vegetarian friendly!
Seva, located at 66 E Forest Ave off of Woodward, offers strictly vegetarian and vegan options. There is also an Ann Arbor location that has a slightly different menu (I'll cover that one another week).
You can choose from appetizers, salads, sandwiches, Mexican, Thai and American entrees, wine, and beer plus a juice bar. They even make their own sodas in lemongrass, pomegranate, strawberry, basil and vanilla flavors.
The menu indicates if meals are vegan (v) and/or gluten free (gf). Otherwise you can assume that it's vegetarian!
When I went last summer, my boyfriend and I ate inside because it was so hot, but the outdoor seating is private and quiet. The restaurant has an open, casual feel, but it is also a good date night option! My boyfriend isn't and never will be a vegetarian, but he ordered the vegan version of the BLT.
I ordered the Grilled pesto pizza sandwich made with mozzarella, Parmesan, tomato and vegan pesto on seeded rye bread. It was delicious! Sandwiches come with either French fries or yam fries. I'm not a fan of yams, but if you like sweet potato fries, then you'll probably like these.
I also got a vegan milkshake. They offer classic milkshakes made with cow's milk, too, but I wanted to try the vegan one and was pleasantly surprised! It tastes different than a classic one, but it has a unique satisfying flavor.
A common fear when you become a vegetarian or vegan is that you can't have your favorite foods anymore. But options like vegan mac 'n cheese, tempeh burgers, pad Thai, TLT (the vegan version of BLT), and scrambled tofu make replacing meat and eggs easier.
After dinner, we were so full that we didn't have room for dessert, but Seva does have a full dessert menu. You can order tiramisu, chocolate raspberry cake and pecan tart among others.
In general, the menu items are very comparable to a regular restaurant. I was expecting a pricier menu, but my sandwich was $10 and the milkshake a bit more expensive at $7. The salads are in the $9-12 range and entrees cost up to $14.
Don't forget - Happy Hour runs from 4-6 Monday through Friday and there are lunch specials 11am-3 on weekdays.
Bon appetit!
