Tips on How to Improve Your Training Program

Our physical therapists offer some tips on how to improve and progress within your training program.

Do you enjoy running, but have difficulty progressing your distance or time without becoming injured or overworked? Here are some tips from our physical therapists regarding how to improve your training program:

1) Avoid increasing your duration or distance greater than 10% per week.

2) Consider a run/walk program when training on a different surface or for longer periods of time.

3) Add strength and cross-training exercise to your workout regimen.

4) Always perform a good static stretching program following your run.

5) Be sure to monitor the wear and tear of your shoes and keep a good supportive shoe.

6) Avoid running downhill if you are prone to shin splints, kneecap pain, lateral hip pain, or back pain.

7) If you start to experience pain, seek consultation from one of our physicians or physical therapists to avoid developing an injury and delaying your training program!
