Your kids + this book from the Orion Library = great ideas!

Wondering how to ease your kids back into school? Grab This Plus That from the Orion Township Public Library. Your kids will look at math in a completely new and creative way.

This Plus That: Life’s Little Equations written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Jen Corace is sheer brilliance. It starts with:

1 + 1 = us

I love it!

Smile + wave = hello
Smile + ocean wave = beach

Some are compare and contrast (I love what does and does not equal a sincere apology!); some are stand-alone sentences. Most are addition, but other math ideas come into play as well:

cozy + smell of pancakes – alarm clock = weekend

After you read This Plus That with your kids, brainstorm and write your own equations. In the book:

leaves + hot soup = fall

What things add up to fall for your kids? What were some things that added up to Summer 2013 for your family? I’d love to frame a sign for our entryway with something like:

1 + 1 = us    and       Joe + Gabriel + Julia + Matt + Kristen = our family

This Plus That + your kids = a whole new way of writing with math symbols!
