ANTHOLOGY: THE PLACE FOR COFFEE CONNOISSEURS

Anthology Coffee is not your average Starbucks, Biggby or Caribou….nor is it trying to be.

Anthology is tucked away in Detroit’s Corktown. Located on Vermont St. – they have taken up residence with other entrepreneurs in the Ponyride building.Though they sell and brew tasty coffee, their main focus is on training and education…they even offer coffee tastings and brewing classes – picture visiting a winery, but with java!

Anthology is a little tricky to find. You definitely have to know where you’re going.

Once we found the door, we were surprised by the casual urban decor and almost chemistry lab-like setup of the coffee bar. We were promptly greeted by Derek who was extremely knowledgeable and took us step-by-step through the brewing process – which included weighing the water and coffee grounds to achieve the ratio for a consistently delicious cup.

After we watched Derek whip up our coffee we sat down to enjoy it with what we will easily call the best chocolate chip cookie we have ever tasted made by Sarah at The Gem Bakery. Our experience at Anthology was unlike any other. We left with a greater appreciation of coffee and a caffeine buzz.

1401 Vermont St., Detroit, MI 48216. Once you dead-end into Porter St. you have arrived. It is a large, white, brick building with black graffiti on it.

Our beaker of coffee – which was about three cups – was about $5. This is an unbelievable deal considering the quality of the beans and the learning experience. A bag of coffee was $15 and the chocolate chip and sea salt cookie from The Gem Bakery (which I should add was huge) was only $2.

Anthology has a welcoming, clean and simple rustic vibe. Tables are made of plywood and the chairs are antiques. It’s totally casual and you could post up for hours talking with the regulars and expanding your coffee mind. While you are there, check out Detroit Denim and The Empowerment Plan, that are also awesome and housed in the Ponyride Building.
