Beaumont to Open Weight Control Center in Canton

The center will provide free weight-loss programs, post-bariatric surgery support programs and other services.

CANTON, MI — Michigan keeps inching up in measures of obesity nationwide, moving to the 17th most obese state in 2015 from No. 18 in 2014. Nearly a third of residents are obese, up almost a full percentage point from the year prior, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Staying on a diet and maintaining a healthy exercise regime can be tough, especially without support. That’s about to change in Canton with the opening of the Beaumont Weight Control Center, one of the services available at Beaumont Hospital – Wayne, 6300 N. Haggerty Road in Canton.

An open house is planned at the Weight Control Center from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Seminars will offer information on bariatric procedures and free weight-loss programs. Those attending can also participate in healthy cooking demonstrations, sample healthy snacks and weight loss products, and learn more about the state-of-the-art, post-operative bariatric surgical suites at Beaumont Hospital – Wayne.

Medical professionals include Dr. Tariq Kakish, medical director, Weight Control Center, Canton, a board-certified bariatric surgeon; Dr. Ed Mavashev, bariatric surgery director at Beaumont Hospital- Wayne and board-certified bariatric surgeon; and Dr. Daniel Bacal, a board-certified bariatric surgeon; as well as exercise physiologists, dietitians and psychologists.

According to the CDC report, 30.7 percent of adults, 13 percent of adolescents and 13.9 percent of children are obese.
