The Historic Home with the Solar Panels
Discover the Durfee Farm house at the corner of Sheldon and Penniman in Plymouth
At the North East corner of Sheldon Rd where Penniman Rd becomes North Territorial there sits a gorgeous old Greek Revival home that stands guard on what used to be an 80 Acre farm. Some time just before 1849 this historic farm house was built and has stood firmly for over 150 years. The actual street address of this home is 1496 Penniman but it also has what appears to be another entrance on the Sheldon Rd side. The original design of this home had 2 entrances and 2 kitchens. One door was the common entrance and the second door was the "special occasion" entrance which lead into the parlor that was used for things like Christmas get-togethers and special guests. There was a kitchen in the back the home that was used during warm weather months and a kitchen in the center of the home which was used for the cold weather months to help keep the center of the house stay warm. This house has seen many changes through the years. One of the most obvious modern day changes are the large SOLAR panels that sit on West facing roof (Sheldon Rd side). This home was once owned by Gideon Durfee and this house stood at the South West corner of his 80 acre farm. For the most part this home still has it's original appearance although it has seen huge changes to its surroundings as Plymouth has grown. When this house was built folks were traveling by horse and carriage and now hundreds of modern cars and trucks cruise by this house everyday on thier way to busy highways like M-14.
