UPDATED: Tanker Truck Driver Died Instantly in Crash

Semi struck a Wayne County Road Commission truck as the crew removed debris from the highway.

Michigan State Police said in a statement that a tanker truck driver involved in a two-vehicle crash was killed instantly Thursday after his truck struck the rear of a Wayne County Road Commission truck on Interstate 275.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was traveling in right lane and passed the road commission truck that was on the shoulder. Its arrow board was activated.

“The semi driver continued in the right lane and struck the rear of a second Wayne County Road Commission vehicle that was stopped in the right lane with its arrow board activated,” according to the statement.

The road crew was removing debris from the side of the highway, Wayne County spokesman Ryan Bridges told The Detroit News.

The driver of the road commission truck was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, but no else was seriously injured in the accident, which shut down a portion of the freeway for several hours.

The freeway was expected to reopen by early evenng.

One person is confirmed dead after a semi truck struck a Wayne County work crew on Interstate 275 near Michigan Avenue in Canton Township, and the freeway could be closed for several hours.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday on the southbound side of the freeway, WWJ reports.

It’s unclear if there are additional injuries, Michigan State Police Sgt. Michael Woody said.

The victim’s name and other details about the accident were not immediately released.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police are on the scene, and the Canton Township Fire Department is assisting.

The freeway is shut down at Michigan Avenue at Exit 22. Motorists are asked to avoid the area. The MSP is providing updates on Twitter. Traffic is stopped near Palmer, and motorists are asked to take Haggerty Road to get around the accident.
