Canton Woman Gives Up $2,000 in iTunes Scam

Swindlers say her grandson has been arrested, convince her to buy iTunes gift cards to free him.

(Posted Oct. 27, 2016) CANTON, MI — An 81-year-old Canton woman has been swindled out of $2,000 in a scheme that is becoming more prevalent, The Canton Observer reported. Canton police Lt. Craig Wilsher says elderly people can be particularly vulnerable to scams.

According to police, the woman was tricked into buying $2,000 in iTunes gift cards, believing she was arranging for bail for her grandson, who she had been told by a female caller had been arrested for texting and driving.

"Don't send money to just anybody," Canton police Lt. Craig Whisler told The Observer. "If you have any concerns or suspicions, just don't do it."
