Are Lawn Care Companies Permitted to Operate?

Since March 24, Michigan residents have been ordered to “Stay Home Stay Safe”. Initially set to expire on April 13, the order was extended to April 30 when the number of COVID-19 cases was rising and the pandemic was hitting the state hard.

Executive Orders 2020-21 and 2020-42 prohibit activities that are not necessary to sustain or protect life. Under these orders, landscaping, lawn care, tree service and related outdoor maintenance companies are not considered essential and therefore may not operate unless they are mitigating a true emergency.

This has been a source of concern to Plymouth residents who fear they will not be able to maintain their property. Although homeowners may continue to cut their grass and take care of their own yards, many rely on a landscaping company to provide these services. This has prompted some residents to ask the City to override the order.

However, it’s important to note that the City of Plymouth does not have the authority to override a Governor’s Executive Order.
