In todays complex social and political environment it is easy to categorize individuals based on their beliefs about certain issues. Gun control and gay marriage are two hot button issues that come to mind. There are many others. But beliefs on issues can cross or blend ideological lines.
We read again today that a Detroit homeowner shot an intruder, who managed to survive but was arrested. Others in the D did not fare as well. In an ideal world, we would not need guns. But we are not like Scandinavia or other countries that did not historically utilize guns for settlement, expansion or civil war. Fact is that it is not possible to rid the country of guns, although reasonable control and checks on purchases are ok by me. This is a fact of life that some of my liberal colleagues do not understand. Chief Craig in Detroit did more to bring safety to citizens when he advised them to train and arm themselves. There are at least 8 citizens in the last month or so in the D that are sure glad they did. It is not acceptable to yell YEEHAH and pull out the six shooter. A reputable CCW class and advanced training will promote gun safety and enhance the security of your home. (Google Castle doctrine). You use a weapon as a LAST resort. No exceptions.
Now this is not very PC which brings us to basketball. The owner of the Los Angeles Clippers has been given a LIFE banishment from NBA and may be forced to sell his team due to some stupid race related comments he made to someone at a game. Now he in my opinion is an idiot but where do you draw the line on reasonableness?? The NBA players association demanded this LIFETIME ban, due to racist and hate speech. Was it racist and hate speech, probably so, but in placating the PC crowd in the NBA players association we open the door to much greater abuse. If an owner comes out in favor of traditional marriage, should he also be banned for LIFE for supposed "hate speech". Remember if you are in favor of traditional marriage in many circles you are a bigot and hater. This door swings both ways on many issues. Its Political Correctness on steroids and dilutes the socially valid positions and values of many liberals in the eyes of others.
Now going back to my liberal roots, Snyder is still the anti-christ and I do admire the Canadian and Scandinavian and European health and social systems. Socially we must do more to take care of each other. I sure wish we were that advanced as a society.
We are not, so we must take the sage advice of Teddy Roosevelt who famously said "Walk softly but carry a big stick". Good advice then, great advice today.
