Celebrating sounds from the U.S. and Latin America, Música de las Américas' features the colorful and well-known works Malegueña by Cuban master Ernesto Lecuona and the sultry Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Brazil’s Heitor Villa Lobos. Though originally for voice and cellos our performance will be with our full, lush string orchestra. From Mexico, Silvestre Revueltas offers his musical spoof of Mexican radio with his comical Ocho por Radio. Argnetina’s Alberto Ginastera is represented by his Variaciones Concertantes, a sensual and rhythmic showcase with solos for all principals of our orchestra. Our special guest will be composer Gabriela Lena Frank for the performance of her Peruvian-inspired work Elegia Andina. Born in Califoria, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Frank explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions.
